![]() Ryuko’s arc from episodes1-3 is where we get the bulk of this. What makes Kill la Kill interesting-and what undoubtedly helped urge this massive response-is that the anime actually engages in a discussion about these outfits instead of just letting these two duke it out half-naked (in a world where this is clearly emphasized to not be the norm) without a word about it. Action heroines fighting in skimpy clothing is a trend we’ve been seeing for ages. Even our protagonist Ryuko describes hers as a “sleazy, midriff-baring number.”Īnd they’re definitely very revealing! But really, it’s nothing new. The (main) source of all this hullabaloo, of course, is the battle armor worn by two of the leading ladies. And two, which says no, Kill la Kill’s fanservice really, truly is disturbing and so disgustingly misogynistic that the show is outright painful to watch. One, which says that Kill la Kill’s fanservice regarding its female characters may be disturbing, but it is actually a deconstruction and works to empower women. For the sake of brevity, I’m just gonna boil it down to what seem to be the two main opposing camps: (Spoilers under the cut, though I do try to be somewhat vague regarding later episodes and omit the huge reveals, for anyone thinking, “I want to watch this show but I’m not sure because of the fanservice…”)Ī popular anime with a tremendous response, bringing up Kill la Kill almost invariably leads to engaging in this much-discussed debate regarding its fanservice, and there are so many different perspectives on the issue that you could probably go on for hours merely listing them. And just with that one sentence I already feel the side-eyes piling in on me, hear the angered accusations of the series’ disgusting sexism and my own mind asking myself, “Aren’t you a feminist?” This is a post I’ve been meaning to make for a while.īecause somehow, somewhere along the way, I fell in love with a certain over-the-top, emotional, ridiculous, nonsensical, incredible-dare I say “incomprehensible”?-show known as Kill la Kill. Please see page 322 of my Compiled Meta Book for updated commentary. EDIT: This is an old post, and does not accurately reflect my opinions now.
